Charles F. Gray came to Saranac Lake from Crown Point in 1873. In 1875 he married Phebe Washer who had arrived one year earlier from Pittsburgh. The next year, Charles built the Berkeley House, the first commercial structure in the village designed to accommodate tubercular patients. One of the first guests at the Berkeley was the Reverend Dr. John Patterson Lundy, who held Episcopal services at the hotel. This led to the formation of St. Luke's Church.
