2008-12-09 15:16:59   You can add an image located on another server to an entry whose views you wish to track, or if you want to track all views (minus edits) and you are the wiki admin, you can add an image to the footer (see wiki settings). Basically, you use the external server to provide stats on that image, and thus see stats for the whole site. That's how many web statistics services work. At the very very basic level, you can just host an image anywhere and look at the server log (keeping in mind that you need to make sure that the image is not cached). For more advanced results, use a web statistics service or software package and you can track all kinds of information about visitors.

There are probably better explanations out there on the web statistics websites that show you how to use their service. As I don't use any, I am hesitant to recommend a particular one. There are also javascript snippets that are used in the same way. I think Google Trends uses a javascript bug for instance. —JabberWokky

2008-12-11 06:14:28   By design, no. It is not considered part of the wiki's data (otherwise anybody could sign up for a Wiki Spot wiki and grab a big mailing list of people, since all Wiki Spot logins are valid across all wikis). That's part of the reason we ask for contact information on the Wiki Directory entry on the hub. It is really only used for password recovery. —JabberWokky

2008-12-19 21:07:37   Marc, i just responded to your message on my user page, which then annoyingly enough, but understandably, only appears on my user page, not yours, which is another reason not to encourage messaging / on user pages. If I post emails, then people talk that way, which is better I think. —amycatania

2009-03-08 15:24:11   These are beautiful photos, Marc! Mary —MaryHotaling

2009-03-08 18:32:07   We don't give you a "backup," per say. We give an export. The semantics are different because a backup is something technical you do to avoid data loss, and we back up the whole of Wiki Spot regularly (though we could improve, as always! And this is something where donations let us fund hardware and other purchases that help a lot!) In the case of our move, we made a decision to move over some edits by hand rather than keep the wikis read-only for another 4 hours.

But! Here's (warning: 250MB) an export of your wiki which I did just now — containing all page versions, all file versions, etc. It's compressed with the 7zip format and the .XML file is in the format described here. Best, —PhilipNeustrom

2009-03-27 02:59:41   Marc. Thank you for the warm welcome to HSL Wiki. I am posting from many miles away; Regina, Canada. My great-great grandfather was James McClelland, owner of land that was divided after his death, and became known as French Hill, hence the parallel James Street and McClelland Street. I was hoping that in some way, I could help and be helped in my genealogical research by sharing here. —ScottHazelwood

2009-03-28 00:01:32   Thanks Marc. What was the title search you mentioned when looking for your house? How did the name come up? I have used the Northern New York Library Network; it is amazing and has helped so much. Thanks for making the page, I will add what I know to help with the site. —ScottHazelwood

2009-03-28 21:59:41   Thank you for adding the tombstone photo! Quite a nice surprise! I was hoping at some point I would see one. I'm not sure where the photo of Mary E. McClelland was taken, it just stated "Grandma McClelland" on the back of the photo. I only have two of her, and none of James. Four of their children died young (Roswell W., Sanford, James D. and Roswell) and according to the Northern New York Tombstone Project, are buried in the same plot. Do you happen to know if their are other names on this stone? —ScottHazelwood

2009-03-30 03:21:06   In this site it says the following which leaves me a little confused:

McCLATCHIE Section 8

James June 1831 - Oct. 1897 Children of J. & M. McCLELLAND Roswell W. June 1864 - May 1866 Sanford Dec. 1877 - Jan. 1878 James D. Sept. 1868 - 1890 Roswell Mar. 1852 - Nov. 1853

Are the children in fact buried in the McClatchie family plot, or is this an error in publishing, as the previous entry is McClatchie? Are they on the same stone or buried elsewhere in the cemetery?

I have read that story of Fred McClelland before, and was trying to find more details. I have little information on the boys of this family. —ScottHazelwood

2009-03-30 14:51:33   Thank you. That's exactly what I was trying to do! —ScottHazelwood

2009-04-02 07:00:18   And thanks for what you've added to help me out. I hope that I don't overstep anything by adding too much of a place that I have never been... yet! —ScottHazelwood

2009-10-31 18:17:29   No problem, if I can't help directly, I can at least point toward help. And just so you're aware, this page can be commented on again. —JabberWokky

2010-01-13 16:57:28   Your email got pushed down the mailbox in the "okay, hyper busy after the holidays, I'll get to that later" rush without my flagging it to make sure I got to it. Sorry about that. I should have flagged it. I wanted to give a more complete answer I could reuse for other people with the same questions, but the short version is: Wiki Spot is a 501(c)3 non-profit with a board of directors (diverse geographically and by background) whose job it is to keep it running. The current usage is well within what we can handle, both technically and organizationally. The software behind Wiki Spot is Sycamore, which is free software and maintained for a few different projects beyond (and unrelated to) Wiki Spot, so it is fairly robust and can be installed without much difficulty on different OS and server setups. If you have any specifics you want expanded, I'd be happy to answer your questions. —Evan 'JabberWokky' Edwards

2010-02-04 03:33:27   Hi Marc! I noticed a photo of Washburn Cottage at 4 McClelland Street. Do you know anything of the history of this house? Seeing that it is on what was McClelland land, I'm wondering if it was occupied at one point by Garrie & Martha Washburn, the daughter of James McClelland. Any ideas?

Cheers! —ScottHazelwood

2010-06-03 21:16:26   This logo will look better, due to color mis-match, on the wiki here:

2010-11-04 03:06:14   Fixed that search hiccup. Thanks for heads-up! —PhilipNeustrom

2011-01-19 21:45:18   I think the comment I just typed got lost. Re photo of Charles R. Henderson Jr. - I don't have any, alas, but would love to see one myself. I do have one of his mother, and also one of his sister who eventually inherited the Henderson cottage. Do you know where I'd find property records to see who my mother sold the house to after she inherited it from Janet in 1958?

AnneBarkman

The house is in the town of St. Armand, so they should have the property records. But the village directories, of which the library has an incomplete collection, lists Martin J. Fitzpatrick as resident 1965 through 1969.

2011-02-02 19:18:45   Thank you for your beautiful photography and contribution to the history of this incredible area. I would like to know if you can tell me the style of home at 103 Old Military rd. It was originally part of the McClellan homes and then the Hoffmans. I am also aware of some sort of controversy regarding one of the houses owned by the McClellans. Do you know which house held the deceased bodies that I read about? Thank you for any information you can offer me. [email protected] —24.58.253.184

2011-05-22 23:33:46   Greetings Marc! Thank you so much for posting the photo with the other two sides of the McClelland tombstone. Do you know if there is anything engraved on the fourth side? Thanks, Scott —ScottHazelwood

2011-05-29 20:37:04   Hi Scott. I just got over there this morning, and no, the fourth side of that stone is blank. —Mwanner

2011-12-21 07:40:49   Marc, regarding a previous message about ownership of the Henderson house: those records are held by the relevant county in the county seat; that is, Elizabethtown for Essex County, and Malone for Franklin County. Disregard Village boundaries — it's the County lines that matter. Mary —MaryHotaling

This is a test

Hi Marc,

thanks for your comment. Okay, will do. Normally, I only check the Davis activity with occasional “excursions” to other Wikis. Will be interesting to see the bigger picture.

Later same day: Hi, Marc, I noticed your Googles photos link isn't working. When I click on it, I land at my own Google photos. I tried extracting the link and paste it in my browser, but then it says it's an error. Maybe you can check if you have your sharing option turned on. If not, the link is only visible to you.

We share a love for taking photos!

>> More on June 5, 2019:

Hi Marc, you are most welcome! Spammers consider the "Main" page as their prime excuse to spam. They think everything goes under the umbrella of "Main".

About your photos link: I didn't correct it, because the link isn't working, and I don't have the ability to get the right link. You should look in your sharing map in Google photos and make sure the "Sharing" option is turned on.  Or maybe the link changed?

Constantia Oomen

Howdy Marc, Google Plus ceased to exist recently, but Google photos is very much alive. Are/were your photos in first or in second?

Also, your comment box isn’t working, at least not here at my address, I am getting my comments in “manually”. Seems to me the Wiki system is bugged here and there.

... A fantastic photo collection, now on Facebook. Have to take some additional time on my desk top to look at them.

This one is out of this world!: 

June 25,  2019. You are welcome, yes, they were getting very excited, like they increasingly knew you weren’t there. I deleted a lot. Are you going to disable all those user accounts or just wait if they do it again?

I already started missing you, guess I now realize that it’s no fun to do it mostly alone, like you seem to have been doing. Constantia

Comment June 29, 2019. Thank you for undoing this Davis Women Business as a location-Wiki! I think the fear that it would create a precedent if allowed is very real.

With all the spam already, imagine the immense amount of commercial Wikis popping up all at the same time. All those people adding and adding to their own one-big-ad. It’s almost a nightmare. 

Thanks!

This spam on “Main” makes no sense to me. You have a full-time job deleting it. I think the admins should delete the whole Wiki sub of Main, Or carefully close it to all no-admin-editors. It’s only a harbor for 24/7 spam, the costs of this “Main” Wiki (time is money) do not outweigh the benefits.

Constantia

Comment July 2, 2019

About the spam on “Main”. Well, yes, but do you think they would take the trouble of finding a semi “suitable” region? This should be tried imo. Other solution would be a person needs to do something to prove he’s not a spammer, something like at least one or two legit edits that need approval of an admin first. You see this on blogs too, first comment of new person that needs to be approved first.

I think this could work.

Comment July 16, 2019.

Howdy Marc! Thanks! And I did it semi-asleep too. I woke up, very groggy, turned on the light, looked on my iPad, and there they were, the sneaky night spammers, I just managed the “Spam on Tuesday” remarks, and then switched off the light and fell asleep again. So you could almost say, I did it in my sleep. 

Today, I received an email from a person who created a spam-ish looking user page on the Wiki (!). I looked him up and the spam-ish looking website I was looking at says the man has a PhD, that is, it says he defended his PhD thesis. And this man is asking me why I deleted his "blog" yesterday. And obviously, after that, you disabled his user account (I assume?). He sent me this email as a verified Wordpress user. Now I am having a hard time believing a man with a PhD doesn't understand a user page on the Local Wiki is not the same as a "blog", especially since he is emailing me as a "verified Wordpress user". So I'm not sure how to respond or better: not to respond?

Constantia-- Yes, he created a blog, but it is at http://crois-sens.org/

His user page here was just creating a link to his blog, an obvious attempt to improve his SEO.  In other  words, spam.

You may tell him I said so, or just ignore him.  If he's that smart, he'll just fade away...

--Marc

Hallo Marc,

no, I won't be emailing him, let's just wait and see. Thanks. Your decision seems the only right one to me. I can't imagine a man - and his co workers? - creating an extremely spam-ish looking page like that ánd have a PhD. This is not the kind of thing I expect from smart people. It's inconceivable to me anyway, why people come up with these horrific looking websites. Why on God's beautiful Earth would one want to create monstrosities like that? It doesn't even work, nobody is falling for that awful looking stuff.

Comment August 8, 2019.

Now for something stunning. I just noticed a spammer has been on the front page of the Davis Wiki this morning, while I was sleeping (slept long again after being awake in the middle of the night for like 50 minutes), after the couple of delete- spams I did. When I fell asleep after this, after some time, don’t know what time, I dreamed somebody was spamming the Davis Wiki front page, and that I just lay there so the speak. Noticing it, but not doing something about it.

Wha... It really happened! I know you all just have to take my word for it, I dreamed this, or was it more like a real information coming thru in my mind’s eye... I tend to the second!

This is weird, am I so connected to the Davis Wiki that I now even dream about something that’s really happening?

Well, you were there to pick up, while I was dreaming about it so, thanks! 

Comment, August 19, 2019.

I just stumbled upon them, exactly as I was cycling home, I didn't know or realize they were there, doing that. I got there at exactly the right moment, very lucky! (as always). No bats over there, with you? Bah, that s##ks, hate when animal-illnesses like that happen! Hope they will return, I sure see them as the Chinese, as bringers of good luck! Oh my, so many of them!

Hi Marc,

yeah, the spam seems to be slow, so a good time to go camping indeed. I will stand guard, no worries... Have fun!

Comment August 29, 2019

Hi Marc, so I found out. It would be good if things were communicated better. If Philip would have announced this somewhere, I would have noticed. And then I would not have been bitchy about it. ;-) Instead, I would have remained silent.

Constantia

Okay, have fun, I will be bashing the spam in your name too! :-)

Howdy, Marc!

Now you are rested, I hope, could you delete this new Wiki, it was made in error, look at the title of it:

December 9, 2019

Hi Marc,

you are welcome, Noticed it late myself too. I screwed up myself a couple of times also lately. With all this intense “Mappain” stuff lately, things were getting a bit hectic, maybe this is the explanation. I tended to get real quick, too quick. 

Happy December season! ☃️

Marc -- I see that you deleted the page for RRRComputer on the Oakland Wiki.  I have no idea what the page said, but this is an actual Oakland-based entity, so I am not sure that it's really spam: https://www.guidestar.org/profile/83-2332271

Thanks! Learn something new every day! I well and truly botched it - apologies!

January 28, 2021 - Howdy, Marc! Wishing you a very belated Happy 2021! Just wanted to say that I am dumbstruck by the amount of spam you have been deleting these days. They suddenly come out of all the caverns? Thank you for all your robust and steady contra-movement against this! Constantia. 珞

September 12, 2021 - Hey Marc! Are you an admin that can lock the Lawson page by any chance? I tried to make a talk page, but I've never learned how to used the remodeled version of this site properly. I've also tried to contact several others, including JabberWokky by phone and also Mr. Neustrom via e-mail. The troll has added libelous and extremely offensive statements about my wife and I that now show up on search engines. This person is clearly mentally ill and somebody really needs to just lock whatever pages he/she edits. Thank you for your help; I can see that you've been reverting and I appreciate it.:

EDIT: Thanks for your response. Wow, that really is a bummer that the lock page feature seems not to have been implemented in the redesign... If the page is deleted at this point, that would be okay, but as you said, that probably won't deter the troll for now. Thanks again though for letting me know.

March 7, 2022

Respect for your diligence!
Have all the spammers come out of their crappy bs caves at once? This is almost not doable anymore.
Crazy times, our world has landed in a defining phase. Perhaps after the Second World War we thought we were living in modern times by now. The opposite turns out to be true with the Putin monster (though he’s certainly not the only human monster).

Keep strong and have a great week, 

Constantia

Hi, Marc.  Thx for disabling the spammer account on the Oakland Wiki.  What's the deal with all of the SBC and Rogers pages that someone is attempting to create?  What's the point?

     -- Neal

Yeah, not our usual SEO link spam, is it?  I imagine they're scamming the people who call thinking they're getting a help desk.  We had a ton more in the main space, hundreds of pages, where they started out claiming to be airline service desks, claiming to be able to help cancelling or rescheduling flights.  You can well imagine-- they ask where to wire your refund, or ask for a credit card or bank acct to charge...

And if you google those phone numbers, you'll find them all over the place: Reddit, Vimeo, and weird sites like math.answers.com and various blogspot blogs.

I keep thinking I should try to figure out a way to report it, but to whom?

   --Marc

Followup: Got me looking, and I wound up here: https://reportfraud.ftc.gov
We'll see if it goes anywhere.

Feb. 14. 2023

Thanks for the warm welcome, Marc! So much has changed in Baltimore over the last years (hours, places closed, new places open) and lots of folks are trying to get back out there. So trying to have a place for what we've seen and invite people here too. Nice to have a place to put observations for locals

Brian

Comment Apr 10, 2023 from NAParish: Hi, Marc.  I don't think the two users who created / edited the Repairing potholes page on the Oakland Wiki should be banned. I think the page should be retained -- and should be linked to the Pothole Vigilantes site: In that site's FAQ and the Our Story page, you will note that they recommend the use of the same brand of asphalt as on the now-deleted potholes page.
